What is Virtual Reality? Virtual Reality (VR) is the use of computer technology to create a simulated environment. Unlike traditional user interfaces, VR places the user inside an experience. Instead of viewing a screen in front of them, users are immersed in a 360°, 3D world. You can look, down and around you to see the world, just as if you are actually there! Audio commentary in our VR headsets gives the visitor important historical information while a scene is played out right in front of them.
It is important to understand the different types of virtual reality headsets that are used and the type of content that you will be experiencing. At Flashback Journey to Pompeii we currently use the Oculus Gear VR headset which incorporates a mobile phone. We do not use Google Cardboard or other cheap headsets.
The content you are viewing is not just still images but rather animated scenes that re-create life in ancient Pompeii. For example, at the Temple of Apollo you will witness a sacred ceremony, at the House of Menander or the House of the Faun you will experience how the ancient Pompeiians lived. Characters move around, you are led through the scene as if you are walking around - but actually you are always standing still when you have the VR headset on. You DO NOT walk around with the VR headset on.
